100 Beautiful Names from Places in Scotland

Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. From the sprawling highlands, legendary lochs, and enchanting castles, Scotland has a rich history with unique culture, landscapes, whisky, and mystery.
Throughout my own ancestral journey, I have discovered much of my genetic makeup is Scottish and Irish. I was raised with the understanding that we had Irish ancestors on the maternal side of my family, and it has been said that my great-great maternal grandmother was an Irish orphan who was adopted by a family in northeast Ohio at the turn of the 20th century. Tracking her whereabouts prior to her adoption has been a somewhat tedious and unfruitful task, but maybe someday, I may find her birth family and name.
While my ancestral history is a bit messy, my husband, however, is primarily of Scottish ancestry. His surname is “Sprowls” which is a variant of the historic “Spreull” name from the lowland regions of Dumbartonshire and Renfrewshire as far back as the 13th century.
During that time, Walter Spreull, the earliest known descendant with the surname, was the seneschal (steward) to Malcolm, the 5th Earl of Lennox. There’s actually an initiative dedicated to preserving the history of the descendants of Walter throughout the world called The Sproul Project. They have discovered several variations of the name, including Sproul, Sprowl, Sprawl, Spreall, Spruyile, and of course, Sprowls. There are thousands of people around the world with one variation or another, that’s for sure.
Through these discoveries, I have been educating myself on the cultural heritages of my ancestors from Scotland and Ireland, and virtually exploring the places where they once called home. While they may be phonetically different or spelt differently, I realize now that many of the towns, street names, counties, and even states we have in the United States are inspired by similar histories from Scottish, Irish, and other European ancestors who migrated here centuries ago.
Naming conventions are fascinating to me as my own name has drawn the ire of inaccurate spelling and mispronunciation throughout my lifetime. In that, I found myself compiling a list of unique and beautiful names of places, estates, etc. that I discovered while taking a virtual stroll in Scotland via Google Earth. So, I thought I should share it with others.
While compiling this list, I considered the following:
- Is the name beautiful enough to name a living being or creature? Would I use this name for a child or a beloved pet?
- Does the name sound eloquent, but easy to pronounce?
- Is the name unique, but not overtly complex?
- Would the name be uncommon in America?
Focusing on rivers to burghs, lochs, waterfalls, islands, and estates throughout the highlands and lowlands, I’ve compiled a list of some of the most beautiful (and perhaps unconventional) names of places in Scotland. Enjoy!
